The absence of Arshdeep Singh from India’s playing XI in the early stages of the T20I series against Australia had fans questioning the team’s selection strategy. However, India’s bowling coach Morne Morkel clarified that the decision was purely strategic and aimed at ensuring long-term sustainability. Morkel emphasized that the coaching staff is focused on workload management and building depth in the bowling department ahead of a packed international calendar.
Morkel, who joined the Indian setup earlier this year, explained that the team management wants to strike a balance between performance and player preservation. “It’s about keeping players fresh and testing new combinations,” he noted. With major events like the T20 World Cup approaching, India’s coaching group is keen on maintaining a strong pool of bowlers who can handle pressure situations, even in the absence of first-choice players.
According to Morkel, Arshdeep Singh’s rotation was not a reflection of poor form, but rather a proactive move to assess alternative bowling options. The left-arm pacer has been one of India’s most consistent T20 performers, known for his control in the death overs and ability to generate swing with the new ball. Resting him allowed others to gain valuable experience against a world-class Australian lineup.
Morkel highlighted that India’s current approach is driven by a “bigger picture” mindset, one where maintaining the physical and mental freshness of players is as important as winning every game.
The plan seems to be paying off, Arshdeep’s return to the XI later in the series saw him strike immediately, reinforcing the value of careful workload rotation. Morkel’s explanation underscores India’s evolving approach to modern cricket: one that prioritizes player longevity, tactical experimentation, and readiness for global competitions.
"Arshdeep is experienced. He understands that there is also a bigger picture where we are trying different combinations. He is a world-class bowler and has taken the most wickets for us in the power play, so we know how valuable he is to the team. But for us on the day, on this tour, it is also to have a look at other combinations, and he understands that."
