Shubman Gill has confidently dispelled all speculation about a rift between him and veteran teammate Rohit Sharma ahead of the first ODI against Australia on October 19, 2025. As the newly appointed ODI captain of India, Gill emphasised that his relationship with Rohit is as strong as ever, with both sharing mutual respect, guidance, and camaraderie.
Gill, who is stepping into the leadership role after Rohit Sharma’s tenure, addressed questions about how their dynamic had changed. The 26-year-old made it clear that "nothing has changed" between them and that the bond remains similar to when Rohit first mentored him during his early international career.
Gill shared that he regularly seeks Rohit’s advice and experience, particularly on challenging situations or pitch conditions.
"I have a very good relationship with both Virat Bhai and Rohit Bhai," Gill said in Perth on the eve of the series opener.
"Whenever I have a doubt about anything, I go to them, take their suggestions, seek their advice, and they never hesitate to tell me anything. See, I think that's the real wealth of experience."
The series will mark the first time Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma play under Gill’s captaincy in ODIs. For Gill, this is a unique challenge and a huge honour. Having idolised both Rohit and Virat growing up, he recognises the significance of leading such legendary figures who have shaped Indian cricket over the last decade.
Gill said, "These are the kind of players I used to idolise when I was growing up. The kind of hunger that they had used to inspire me. It is a big honour for me to be able to lead such legends of the game. I am sure there would be so many moments in this series where I would be able to learn from them."
Gill acknowledges the legacy built by previous great leaders, including MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma himself. He has had detailed conversations with Rohit and Virat about the kind of culture and team ethos they envision, aiming to carry their vision forward.
"First Mahi Bhai, then Virat Bhai, and now we’ll carry forward the legacy that Rohit Bhai has built,” Gill added.
