India’s biggest medal hope event is the men’s javelin throw, in which Neeraj Chopra is the defending champion. With the country’s haul limited to three bronze medals so far that came from shooting, the hope is that Chopra will add some sparkle by defending his title. The Tokyo Olympics champ, though, is coming into the Games having participated in only 3 competitive meets this year and registering throws nowhere near his personal best of 89.94m. He’s had a slight abductor issue, but nothing too worrisome, he’d maintained.
Chopra will take the field in the men’s javelin qualification from 3.20 pm onward on August 6. He is in Group B of the 32-member strong athlete list. His teammate Kishore Jena is in Group A and will begin ahead of Chopra at 1.50 pm. 11 of the 32 contestants have registered throws over 85m this season, with at least 4 boasting personal bests above 90m.
