Perth Scorchers went on to win their sixth Big Bash League (BBL) title on January 25 as they defeated Sydney Sixers in the championship game. Their dominant performance throughout the season helped them hold their nerves and beat the Sixers third time in a row this season. It was the overall performance from the entire team that helped them clinch another title.
It was Scorchers' decision to bowl first on winning the toss. The pitch looked interesting and the Sixers would have thought of putting up a mammoth total on the board to pressurise the opponents.
However, they kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Steven Smith, Josh Philippe, and Moises Henriques scored 24 runs each and were also the highest run-scores of their innings. The rest of the batters failed to stick around and stitch partnerships that could have helped them at that point. They could only score 132 runs in the first innings.
Meanwhile, Jhye Richardson and David Payne claimed three wickets for the Scorchers while Mahli Beardman took two wickets. Overall, it was a complete bowling effort from the team that lead to their opponent's downfall.
Whenever the opening pair gives a solid start and the rest of the batters convert it, victory can hardly stay away from that team. Same happened wth the Scorchers. Opening pair, Mitchell Marsh (44) and Finn Allen (36) started the innings on a good not, attacking the bowlers, showcasing that they were ready to take the trophy home. They scored 80 runs 8.2 overs before Allen lost his wicket.
Later, Josh Inglis (29) and Marsh played a stunning innings and led the team towards another victory. Sean Abbott and Mitchell Starc's presence in the bowling unit couldn't help the Sixers win the game as the runs on the scorecard were too less to defend. David Payne was awarded with the Player of the Match Trophy for an incredible bowling performance.
