Manchester United edged out Burnley 3-2 in a dramatic Premier League encounter at Old Trafford on a rainy Saturday afternoon, with Bruno Fernandes scoring a stoppage-time penalty to seal the Reds’ first win of the season before the international break.
Ruben Amorim’s side took the lead just before half-time thanks to a fortunate own goal from Burnley captain Josh Cullen.
Despite losing Matheus Cunha early to injury, United dominated much of the first half, creating several good chances. Burnley goalkeeper Martin Dubravka was kept busy, making key saves to keep his team in the game.
The Clarets fought back impressively after the break. Lyle Foster’s 55th-minute strike leveled for Burnley, but the joy was short-lived as Bryan Mbeumo, netting his first Premier League goal for United, restored the hosts’ lead within a minute.

Burnley remained resilient and equalized again through Jaidon Anthony in the 66th minute after Altay Bayindir had saved an initial effort.
The match swung dramatically in injury time. After Burnley’s Anthony was penalized for pulling Amad’s shirt in the box, Fernandes calmly converted the resulting penalty in the seventh minute of stoppage time to send Old Trafford into celebration with his 99th goal for the club.
United made eight changes from their midweek Carabao Cup defeat, with only Cunha, Amad, and Diogo Dalot retaining their places. Noussair Mazraoui also returned from injury to feature on the bench. Burnley fielded the same squad that beat Sunderland last weekend, featuring academy graduate Hannibal and ex-loanee Dubravka.
The first half saw United pressing high, with early chances coming from Cunha and Mbeumo. A quick VAR review overturned an initial decision awarding United a penalty in the 16th minute.
The home side finally took the lead thanks to a scramble in the Burnley box involving Casemiro, Fernandes’ free-kick, and an unfortunate Josh Cullen own goal.
Despite Burnley’s increased pressure later in the half, United headed into the break with a slender lead, having created numerous chances, including a close header from Mason Mount and a powerful volley from Amad.
The intensity continued after the break with both sides trading goals in quick succession. Foster’s equalizer was met with an instant response as Mbeumo finished neatly following Dalot’s persistence down the left flank. Burnley’s Anthony temporarily restored parity with a close-range goal after a rebound from Bayindir.
Substitutions, including the introduction of Kobbie Mainoo, Benjamin Sesko, and Mazraoui, kept United’s attacking options fresh in the final stages, as the game swung back and forth.
Ultimately, it was Fernandes’ composure in the dying moments that made the difference. Following a VAR check, referee Sam Barrott awarded a penalty after Anthony pulled Amad’s shirt in the area.

Fernandes, who had missed a penalty in the last match, coolly dispatched the spot-kick, ensuring a crucial victory for United, providing a morale boost after their disappointing cup exit earlier in the week.
