The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially extended the contract of Ajit Agarkar as the Chief Selector of the Senior Men’s Selection Committee until June 2026. The decision comes just two days after India’s squad for the Asia Cup 2025 was announced, signaling the board’s faith in Agarkar’s vision and leadership. He has been an incredible addition to the selection committee in the past few years.
In 2023, Agarkar took charge of the selection committee and thanks to him, India reached the ODI World Cup final in 2023, won the T20 World Cup in 2024, and followed it up with another ICC triumph by clinching the Champions Trophy earlier this year. He has looked for fine talents and formed a team.
Beyond silverware, his biggest achievement has been guiding India through a smooth leadership transition. Shubman Gill’s appointment as Test captain and Suryakumar Yadav’s elevation as T20I skipper reflect a long-term roadmap for the team, while senior stalwarts like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravindra Jadeja have retired.
While Agarkar’s extended tenure is set to bring consistency, changes are expected in the composition of the selection panel. S. Sharath, one of the senior-most members of the committee, will complete his four-year term and is likely to step down.
The BCCI is expected to invite applications for his replacement during its Annual General Meeting in September. Other selectors such as S S Das, Subroto Banerjee, and Ajay Ratra remain in their roles for now, but a broader reshuffle cannot be ruled out.
Interestingly, the extension of Agarkar’s contract was reportedly finalized months before the Asia Cup squad was announced. The timing of the official announcement, however, has drawn attention as it comes amid debates around selection choices for the continental tournament.
Nonetheless, the move reflects the BCCI’s satisfaction with the direction in which Agarkar has steered Indian cricket and its desire to maintain continuity ahead of the 2026 T20 World Cup and the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Beyond the men’s team, the board is also preparing to restructure the women’s and junior men’s selection panels. Members of the women’s selection committee, including Neetu David, have completed their terms, while the junior men’s panel is also due for changes.
With Agarkar’s extension, however, the BCCI has sent a strong message that stability at the top will remain the cornerstone of India’s selection strategy.
