In a resounding response to being omitted from India’s upcoming ODI squad, Ruturaj Gaikwad has etched his name into the history books of Indian domestic cricket. On Thursday, January 8, 2026, the Maharashtra captain slammed a masterful 134 not out against Goa, equaling the long-standing record for the most centuries in the history of the Vijay Hazare Trophy (VHT). With this knock, Gaikwad has reached 15 centuries in the premier 50-over competition, joining his senior Maharashtra teammate Ankit Bawne at the summit of the all-time list.
Gaikwad’s milestone was not just a statistical achievement; it was a high-pressure rescue mission. Playing at the Soni Stadium in Jaipur, Maharashtra, found themselves in a dire situation, reeling at 25/5 within the first 10 overs after Arjun Tendulkar and Vasuki Koushik tore through the top order.
Walking in at an unconventional No. 5, Gaikwad displayed the temperament of a veteran. He anchored the innings with surgical precision, rotating the strike and absorbing pressure before launching a late-overs assault. His unbeaten 134 came off just 131 balls, marked by eight boundaries and six towering sixes, as he guided Maharashtra to a competitive total of 249/7.
What makes Gaikwad’s feat truly staggering is the speed at which he has reached the milestone. While Ankit Bawne took 94 innings to reach 15 centuries, Gaikwad has achieved the same mark in just 59 innings.

This knock also marked his 20th List A century in just 95 innings, making him the fastest player in world history to reach that landmark, surpassing the likes of Virat Kohli and Hashim Amla.
During the course of his innings, Gaikwad also crossed the 5,000-run mark in List A cricket. In doing so, he officially surpassed Australian legend Michael Bevan to hold the highest batting average in List A history (for players with a minimum of 50 innings). Gaikwad’s average now stands at a phenomenal 58.83, edging past Bevan’s long-standing mark of 57.86.
He is also the fastest to achieve the landmark of the 5000 List-A run.
The timing of this historic century is impossible to ignore. Just 48 hours ago, Gaikwad was surprisingly excluded from India’s 15-member squad for the ODI series against New Zealand, despite scoring his maiden international ODI ton against South Africa only last month.
