As the IPL 2026 auction approaches, rumours surrounding a potential blockbuster trade between Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings have taken centre stage. Reports suggest that CSK could target Sanju Samson as part of their leadership transition plans. However, former India spinner R. Ashwin believes the franchise will tread carefully before handing him the captaincy.

Ashwin, who has played for both franchises, highlighted that CSK traditionally values stability and continuity. If Samson joins the yellow brigade, he is expected to bring flair and experience to their batting lineup but may initially be eased into the system rather than being thrust into leadership duties. The Chennai management has historically preferred nurturing leaders over time, a model seen with Ruturaj Gaikwad’s gradual rise in the setup.

Why Samson’s arrival could redefine CSK’s dynamics?

Sanju Samson’s addition could alter CSK’s entire team composition. His ability to play both as a top-order aggressor and a middle-order stabilizer provides flexibility that Chennai have lacked since MS Dhoni’s partial retirement phase. With Dhoni’s playing future still uncertain, bringing Samson into the mix would give the franchise a long-term wicketkeeping and batting solution.

However, the potential trade might come at a cost, possibly involving a senior all-rounder like Ravindra Jadeja moving in the opposite direction. Losing Jadeja would mean sacrificing a proven match-winner, both with bat and ball, which could leave a gap in CSK’s balance.

Ashwin’s assessment suggests that while Samson fits CSK’s temperament and team-first approach, the leadership question might wait another season. The management may prefer to let him adapt to their culture before assigning additional responsibilities.

"I dont think Sanju will get captaincy at CSK because it would be his first year and I am not sure they will give him captaincy right away. But he will definitely be an option to lead in the future if the trade happens," said Ravichandran Ashwin on 'Ash ki Baat'.
