Pakistan’s preparations for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 have received a timely boost after star fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi shared an optimistic update on his recovery. The left-arm pacer, who has been sidelined due to a knee injury during the BBL stint, indicated that his rehabilitation is progressing steadily, keeping him firmly in contention for a return ahead of the marquee tournament.

Afridi sustained the injury during his stint in overseas league cricket, which forced him to cut short his playing commitments and return to Pakistan for further assessment. Since then, he has been under the supervision of the Pakistan Cricket Board’s medical team, focusing on regaining full fitness while avoiding any risk of aggravation.

With the T20 World Cup scheduled to be held in India and Sri Lanka from February 7, Afridi’s availability is seen as crucial for Pakistan’s campaign. His ability to strike early with the new ball and deliver under pressure has made him one of the side’s most valuable assets in global tournaments, and the team management is keen not to rush his return prematurely.

"My rehab is ongoing, with the PCB team monitoring it. I'm doing gym work and working on my batting at the moment. I'll start bowling next week. It's not as serious as it was last time. There's a bit of swelling on the bone. The MRI report wasn't that [concerning], this might not take a month. It's more like a week,” said Shaheen Afridi as quoted by ICC.

Pakistan keep close watch on Shaheen Afridi’s recovery

Speaking about his current condition, Afridi revealed that he has resumed gym work and light training, while bowling workloads will be increased gradually once he receives full medical clearance. He stressed that the injury is manageable and not as serious as initially feared, adding that the focus remains on long-term fitness rather than short-term gains.

Afridi’s progress will continue to be monitored over the coming weeks, especially as Pakistan build momentum through bilateral series and preparatory matches. A fully fit Afridi would not only add firepower to the bowling unit but also bring experience and leadership to the squad in high-pressure matches.
