Former Pakistan cricket captain Shahid Afridi has openly called for the resignation of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi following the Asia Cup 2025 controversy. Afridi, known for his candid opinions on cricket administration, criticized Naqvi for holding dual responsibilities as both PCB Chairman and Pakistan’s Interior Minister. According to Afridi, these overlapping roles create a conflict of interest and prevent Naqvi from giving his full attention to the challenges facing Pakistan cricket.
Afridi also expressed concerns over what he perceives as poor decision-making by the PCB leadership. He highlighted that the mismanagement during the Asia Cup, including disputes over the trophy presentation, reflects a lack of focused leadership. For Afridi, cricket administration should be handled by someone with dedicated expertise and a clear understanding of the sport, rather than being split with political or bureaucratic duties.
The Asia Cup controversy has sparked widespread debate among former players, analysts, and fans alike. Naqvi’s refusal to follow protocol after India’s victory in the final drew criticism internationally and domestically. Afridi’s remarks underscore the urgency for the PCB to address governance issues and restore credibility in the eyes of the cricketing community.
"My request or advice to Naqvi Saheb is that these are two very important posts, and they are big jobs that need time," said Afridi as quoted by Telecom Asia Sport.
"PCB is totally different from the Interior Ministry, so it must be kept separate. It would be a big decision and should be taken as soon as possible. Pakistan cricket needs special attention and time Naqvi cannot rely totally on advisers. These advisers are taking him nowhere and he himself says that he doesn't know much about cricket. He needs to appoint good and competent advisers who know about the game," he added.
Afridi’s call for Naqvi to step down has amplified discussions around governance reforms in Pakistan cricket. Observers argue that having a dedicated and experienced chairman is crucial to navigating challenges such as player management, scheduling conflicts, and international relations. Afridi emphasized that effective leadership is not just about managing tournaments but also about nurturing talent, maintaining transparency, and making informed decisions for the sport’s long-term benefit.
If the PCB responds to Afridi’s demands, it could set a precedent for holding cricket administrators accountable. The ongoing debate also highlights the importance of separating political roles from sports administration to ensure decisions are made solely in the interest of cricket. For Afridi and many cricket followers, the Asia Cup controversy is a wake-up call for structural reforms and stronger leadership at the top of Pakistan cricket.
