India's star batter and ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer suffered an injury during the ODI series against Australia and was ruled out of the tournament. Later, he had to miss the South Africa series as well due to his spleen injury. With the New Zealand series coming up from January 11, Iyer's availability has been in question for the longest time.
Giving an injury update on Iyer, a BCCI source revealed that he has started his skill training and is recovering well. However, the board will take some decisions after he gets a green signal from the medical team. Iyer is also expected to play in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and his performance and fitness will help him make a comeback into the ODI team.
"Shreyas Iyer has started skill training this week. He is in good shape. But will have to assess his ability to field in a 50 over game before putting him back in the park. Depending on how he pulls up, and his participation in Vijay Hazare will be decided," said a BCCI source as quoted by NDTV.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) are set to announce the squad for the ODI series against New Zealand on January 4, 2026. Reports suggest that the board will announce the squad in the first week of January as the players will be busy playing the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26.
BCCI have announced the T20I squad and the one for the T20 World Cup 2026. There are some new names like Ishan Kishan who is set to make his comeback. Moreover, Ishan is likely to be included in the ODI series as well after a stunning century in the first match in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025.
