Kolkata: As the excitement around the India vs West Indies virtual quarter-final sets to electrify Eden Gardens, there is another exciting piece of news brewing off the field for "Dada" fans. The long-awaited biopic of Sourav Ganguly, starring Rajkummar Rao, has expanded its ensemble cast with two veteran Bollywood actors. Gajraj Rao is reportedly set to play the late Jagmohan Dalmiya, the legendary cricket administrator and former BCCI President who shared a mentor-like bond with Sourav Ganguly.
Adding to the movie's star cast, Boman Irani has been roped in to portray Chandidas Ganguly, Sourav’s father, who was also a former cricket administrator.
While Sourav's family was already in connection with cricket, as his father held several senior positions in the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), and his elder brother Snehasish was a former first-class cricketer too. However, along with them, Jagmohan Damliya also played a pivotal role in the former India captain's career. So, with Boman Irani and Gajraj Rao's inclusion in the movie, the fans can now expect a stellar performance in the movie, which is being directed by Vikramaditya Motwane and produced by Luv Ranjan.
Although these two roles are nearly confirmed, there is no confirmation on who would play the role of Snehasish Ganguly. Anyone who will play his role would again have to acquire the cricketing roles to do justice to the former cricketer's life, as Sourav had started playing cricket after being influenced by his elder brother.
Rajkummar Rao, known for his "chameleon-like" capacity to settle into characters, has already begun intensive preparations for the biopic. Reports indicate that the actor has dropped nearly 10kg following his last project to achieve the lean, athletic frame of a professional cricketer like 'Dada'.
Beyond the physical transformation, Rao is undergoing rigorous cricket coaching to master Ganguly’s iconic left-handed batting style and his distinctive walk and on-field characteristics.
Moreover, as per the reports, the actor will now also spend a few days at Ganguly's residence in Behala, Kolkata, to get to know the culture and the family more. For Rajkumar, getting the language and culture won't be that difficult since his wife Patralekha is a Bengali, and he has also worked with many Tollywood stars before.
