Sri Lanka have put an outstanding performance against Ireland in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 on February 8 in Colombo. It was a high-intensity match where Ireland were chasing 164 runs in the second innings. The batters failed to put up a good show and hence, they lost the game by a small margin.

Skipper Paul Stirling put Sri Lanka to bat first after winning the toss. The hosts kept losing wickets at regular intervals but somehow managed to get to 163 runs in the first innings. Kusal Mendis slammed 56 off 43 balls, including five boundaries while Kamindu Mendis slammed 44 off 19 balls, including four boundaries and two sixes.

For Ireland, Barry McCarthy and George Dockrell claimed two wickets each. While Dockrell was quite economical, McCarthy was expensive. The batters in the death overs managed to score runs which is why they reached a respectable target.

Theekshana and Hasaranga helped Sri Lanka win the match

There are many bowlers who performed well for Sri Lanka today but Maheesh Theekshana and Wanindu Hasanga were outstanding. They claimed three wickets and helped the win turn the tables. Ireland batters started well in the powerplay but kep losing wickets in the middle. They also failed to stitch partnerships that could have saved them from losing the game.

Infact, Matheesha Pathirana was also brilliant with the ball, taking two wickets. While he was a bit expensive, the spinners kept it down for Sri Lanka. It was their first game and they played with utmost confidence. Kamindu Mendis was awarded with the Player of the Match Trophy for an incredible performance.
