Suryakumar Yadav has come out strongly in support of opener Shubman Gill after questions were raised over his strike rate in the ongoing T20I series against Australia. The Indian captain silenced critics by praising the Gill-Abhishek Sharma opening partnership, calling it a combination of “fire and fire” rather than the clichéd “fire and ice”. His comments not only defended Gill’s approach but also highlighted India’s evolving attacking philosophy in white-ball cricket.
During the post-match media interaction, Suryakumar addressed the growing chatter surrounding Shubman Gill’s scoring tempo. The 25-year-old opener had faced scrutiny after his 46 off 39 balls in the fourth T20I, an innings that some termed “slow” by modern standards. However, Suryakumar was quick to remind critics that numbers often fail to capture the game’s tactical nuances.

The captain further dismissed any notions of imbalance between Gill and Abhishek Sharma, insisting both openers play aggressively but with clarity of role.
Abhishek Sharma’s blistering form in the same series, where he scored rapid fifties and reached milestones at record pace, has only strengthened their pairing. The duo’s left-right combination has provided India with quick starts, unsettling opposition bowlers early. Abhishek, who has shared a long cricketing journey with Gill since their under-12 days, also praised his partner’s adaptability.
“They both are looking to match each other's strike rates. It's a combination of fire and fire,” Suryakumar told reporters.
“In my opinion, if the wicket is a bit difficult, then it is important to adapt. Today, the wicket was good, so these two scored more than 50 in five years. In the last game, it was important to read the wicket, and these two did just that. At this level, experience helps and see how he (Gill) adapted in the last game. Both Abhishek and Gill have good communication. It is just a case of adapting; they complement each other well,” he added.
