Ravi Shastri, the former India coach and experienced cricket expert, recently talked about Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma coming back to international cricket, especially as they look ahead to the 2027 World Cup. Both players, who have played for many years, have had to deal with the difficulties of returning after a long time away from top-level cricket.

Shastri started by saying it is normal to feel out of practice after a long break. He pointed out how hard it is for teams from other countries to get used to tough conditions, like the fast and bouncy pitches in Australia.
He talked about how hard it is for a team to adjust when they arrive only two days before a game in Perth, which is known for its fast pitches and strong fast bowlers. Still, Shastri is hopeful, saying that the two players will have matches in Adelaide where they can practice and get their focus back.
Shastri believes it is important to be patient and look at the bigger picture when judging their return. Instead of making quick judgments based on their first games, he said people should think about not just their skills, but also their passion, drive, and love for the game.
“When you come back at that age, after some time, it’s about how much you’re enjoying the sport and how much hunger is there and passion is left in you to play the game,” he explained.

Shastri said that if two out of those three things—enjoyment, hunger, and passion—are still there, then people should give these two great players time to get back to their best. He believes their skill and talent will win out in the end.
Beyond their current form, Shastri reflected on the lasting stature of Kohli and Rohit in Indian cricket and globally. Having coached both players extensively, he understands the immense respect they command, especially from Australian crowds.
“The contribution is not over two or three years. The contribution is over a decade, decade and a half in the case of Virat. It’s massive and people don’t forget that,” Shastri stressed.
The legacy of these two stalwarts is secure, irrespective of when they decide to retire. They have faced some of the best bowlers in cricket history and excelled, cementing their places among the game’s all-time greats. Shastri’s assurance that their legacy “will remain” reassures fans that their incredible careers will be remembered long after they leave the field.
"It's special. Their legacy will remain. Whether they finish tomorrow or they finish the day after or whenever. That legacy will remain."
