The UEFA Super Cup is a prestigious annual football match that happens between the winners of the UEFA Champions League and the winners of the UEFA Europa League. Established in 1972, the Super Cup was originally contested between the winners of the European Cup (now Champions League) and the European Cup Winners' Cup.

When did UEFA Super Cup's new format start?

After the abolition of the Cup Winners' Cup in 1999, the tournament now gets played between the Champions League and UEFA Cup/Europa League winners. This match acts as the curtain raiser for the new European season.

Since 1998, the Super Cup has been played as a one-legged match. Before that, it was a two-legged affair.
