Shubman Gill, the newly appointed captain of the Indian ODI team, has set an ambitious tone for the future as he aims to lead Team India to a period of unparalleled success. Before the upcoming white-ball tour to Australia, test captain Shubman Gill was made the One-day captain, succeeding Rohit Sharma, who had led India to Champions Trophy success early in 2025.

Taking over the reins of the ODI side, Shubman Gill accepted the fact that it would be a big reponsibility to lead the team in the 50-over format, specially with a marquee event like the 2027 ICC World Cup in target. India lost the 2023 ICC World Cup final against Australia and would definitely love to touch the glory once again for the first time since 2011.
“Big responsibility and even a bigger honour. Very excited to lead my country in that format,” Gill said in the press conference ahead of the India vs West Indies second test in Delhi.
Gill had a very successful first few months as the captain of the test team. Under his captaincy, a young Indian test team was able to draw the England series in England. Not only that, Gill went on to break multiple records with the bat as well.
Moreover, the young captain has started the West Indies series on a good note, scoring a fifty with the bat and winning the first test handsomely. However, Gill does not want to look back at things he has achieved so far, but wants to focus on things that are coming ahead of him and team India. Most importantly, his focus is to win everything in the 50-over format.
“Last few months have been very exciting for me. I am really looking forward to what the future has. I wanna stay as present as possible and do not really wanna look back at what I have been able to achieve or what we as a team have been able to achieve. Just want to look forward and win everything we have in the upcoming months,” Gill added during the press conference.
