India made a strong start with the ball in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 final as Axar Patel provided the crucial early breakthrough by dismissing New Zealand opener Finn Allen. The high-voltage title clash between India and New Zealand is being played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, with the Black Caps chasing a massive target set by the hosts.
New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner had earlier won the toss and opted to field first, hoping his bowlers could restrict India on a batting-friendly surface. However, the Indian batting lineup delivered an explosive performance.
Openers Abhishek Sharma (52) and Sanju Samson (89) laid a strong foundation, while the middle order maintained the momentum to post a huge total on the board. India eventually piled up 255/5 in their 20 overs, one of the highest totals ever recorded in a T20 World Cup final. New Zealand didn;t get a good start to their innings as they kept losing wickets at regular interval.
After taking Allen's wicket, Axar went on to dismiss Glenn Phillips as well. Then Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Rachin Ravindra in his first ball, putting pressure back on the New Zealand batters. As we write, the Kiwis have already lost five wickets and are on the verge of losing the finals once more.
Indian batters' dominant performance in the tournament helped them maintained the momentum and are will most likely to win the T20 World Cup as well. With this, India will repeat the history and defeat the history as well. They will become the first team to win the trophy thrice and the only team to win a home World Cup.
