The Indian cricket team lost one more home series in a span of a year under head coach Gautam Gambhir, and the Guwahati crowd didn’t hold back from expressing their disappointment. South Africa, on the Indian soil, whitewashed the 2-match Test series, making a clear statement to world cricket. The reigning World Test Champions did everything correctly and hence, got the trophy as well.
But Gambhir and his team were shattered to the core after another clean sweep at home. There were many faults in the team selection, the way players performed, and the fielding as well. While the loss was inevitable, the Guwahati crowd stayed till day five of the second Test and bashed head coach Gambhir on the field.
A video went viral on social media where fans shouted ‘Gautam Gambhir Hay Hay’ when the players and the coaching staff were waiting on the field after the end of the game.
India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir didn’t hold back from giving a straightforward answer after the team’s loss against South Africa. The loss margin wasn’t less but Gambhir tried hard to defend himself by saying, ‘You dont need flamboyant and talented players in Test cricket.’ The statement didn’t sit well with the fans, and he received massive outrage on social media after that.
"You don't need the most flamboyant and talented cricketers to play Test cricket. What we need is tough characters with limited skills. They make good Test cricketers," said Gautam Gambhir at a press conference.
South Africa played a confident game of cricket, and the series win was their prize. After 25 years, they won a series in India under Temba Bavuma’s captaincy. Interestingly, Bavuma has a streak of 11 matches and hasn’t lost any game yet.
