Delhi Capitals' playoff hopes took a significant blow on Sunday after they were thrashed by Gujarat Titans in a dominant 10-wicket defeat at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. But the match wasn't just about Gujarat’s clinical performance; it was also marred by a controversial moment involving DC spinner Kuldeep Yadav and on-field umpire Keyur Kelkar that turned the spotlight away from the game.
The flashpoint occurred on the first ball of the eighth over of Gujarat’s chase. Kuldeep Yadav, who had been toiling without success, tossed up a delivery on middle and leg to an in-form Sai Sudharsan. The left-hander attempted a flick but missed the ball completely, and Kuldeep went up in an animated appeal for leg-before-wicket.
Umpire Keyur Kelkar, however, was unmoved and turned it down. DC skipper Axar Patel opted for the DRS review, which added further drama to the moment. Replays confirmed there was no bat involved, but the ball-tracking showed it clipping the leg stump, classified as "umpire’s call". Since the on-field decision was not out, the original call stood.
Kuldeep’s reaction was immediate and fiery. He was seen visibly arguing with the umpire, gesturing toward the big screen and expressing his disbelief over the decision. The exchange continued for several seconds before the situation was calmed by Axar Patel and senior players from both sides. Watch the video here:
Earlier in the evening, Gujarat Titans had won the toss and elected to bowl first — a decision that initially looked risky as Delhi piled on a competitive total of 199/3. KL Rahul starred with a masterful 112* off 65 balls, anchoring the innings with grace and power. He was supported by Abishek Porel, who added 30 runs, and late cameos from Axar Patel (25) and Tristan Stubbs (21*) added valuable momentum.
But what followed in Gujarat's reply was nothing short of a batting exhibition. Sai Sudharsan and Shubman Gill orchestrated a double-century stand that left Delhi shell-shocked. Sudharsan scored a stunning unbeaten 108* off 61 balls, while Gill hammered 93* from just 53 deliveries. The pair reached the 200-run target in 19 overs without losing a wicket, handing GT one of the most emphatic wins of the season.
