Lalit Modi, the founder and former Chairman of the IPL, shared the unseen footage of the Sreesanth-Harbhajan drama that happened in the league back in 2008. While playing for Kings XI Punjab and Mumbai Indians, respectively, both players indulged into an ugly fight that turned into their biggest nightmare. Harbhajan, losing his calm, went on to slap Sreesanth during the match,
The former Chairman of IPL, Modi, spoke about the incident on former Australia captain Michael Clarke's podcast, Beyond23 Cricket. After 18 years, Lalit Modi decided to share the video for the fans to watch what happened on that day.
"I was there on the field. The game was over, it was Bhajji (Harbhajan), it was Sreesanth. Cameras had shut off. One of my security cameras was on. I was walking out of the field. The players were going, thanking each other. It comes to Sreesanth and Bhajji. Bhajji just looks at him, says something, and gives him a backhander. Here's the video that we were talking about. I haven't put it out for so long," Lalit Modi said on the Beyond23 Cricket Podcast.
"I sat them both down and I had to penalize Bhajji in that meeting. I did penalize him for eight games. Some people were gunning for a lifetime suspension, but we decided that it's a new league. Everybody learned a lesson. It wasn't about Bhajji or Sreesanth. We needed to set an example and boundaries," he added.
The incident took the cricket world by storm. Known as a Gentleman's game, the incident was against the spirit of the sports but how Modi handled the situation was commendable. Both the players preferred to not cross each other's path post the incident. However, a few months ago Harbhajan Singh released a video apologizing to Sreesanth regarding the incident.
Harbhajan was banned for eight matches in the IPL. In the long turn, he turned out to be one of the best bowlers in the tournament. It was a smart decision by Lalit Modi to not put a life long ban on the bowler. Later in 2015, Sreesanth was found guilty of match fixing and was banned from the IPL.
