The excitement around the return of the Indian Premier League (IPL) mini auction has reached heights as viewers have taken over the social media with assumptions and guessing games. The auction is all set to be hosted by Abu Dhabi on December 16, from 1 PM onwards. The players who have registered for the auction will be super nervous and excited at the same time as they might get picked up by any of the franchises.
Meanwhile, a large amount of spotlight is likely to be on Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) former player Venkatesh Iyer as he was the highest paid cricketer in the IPL 2025. Though he didn’t get a lot of chances to showcase his talent with KKR, Iyer is one of the best players in the tournament. Hence, we will discuss the three teams that could target him in the upcoming IPL auction.
The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have a good top order but they still lack an all-rounder who can he helpful with the bat as well as with the ball. Iyer’s ability to open the batting or slot into the middle order, along with a few overs of medium pace, makes him a strong option for CSK as they plan for succession and squad depth.
After Ravindra Jadeja’s trade, CSK will be looking to get an all-rounder who can stick around for a long time and Iyer is definitely the one. However, they will go after him until a certain amount in the bidding war.
In case of Punjab Kings (PBKS), who have often lacked stability in their top order and middle overs, Venkatesh Iyer’s aggressive intent in the powerplay and experience in pressure games could address that gap.
Moreover, they also don’t have much senior players in the team except for Arshdeep Singh, Shreyas Iyer, and others. It is most likely that they can go after Venkatesh Iyer in the auction.
Lastly, the Delhi Capitals (DC) have formed a great team in the previous season but their Indian core looked quite weak. This is where they will think about bringing in Venkatesh Iyer and strengthening their Indian core, especially if they look to add a left-handed batter who can take on fast bowlers early.
His all-round skill set would allow DC to balance their XI without overloading or over-depending on the overseas options. Iyer has good experience and has good numbers in the tournament, making him a strong contender.
Cricket fans in India can watch the IPL 2026 mini auction on December 16 from 1 PM onwards online on JioHotstar, via OTTplay Premium.
