Wimbledon 2024: Defending champion Marketa Vondrousova does a Steffi Graff at Wimbledon 2024
Last Updated: 08.22 PM, Jul 03, 2024
Marketa Vondrousova became the first-ever unseeded player to win Wimbledon only a year ago. Her title defence, though, came crashing down as she was defeated in straight sets (6-4 6-2) by Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro on day 2 of the grass court Grand Slam tournament. This is only the second time in the history of the open era that a defending champion has lost in the first round. Prior to Vondrousova’s exit, it was Steffi Graf in 1994, when she lost to Lori McNeil.

When the Wimbledon women’s singles draw was announced on June 28, the prediction was that World No.1 Iga Swiatek, who has not had a great track record at the tournament and is gunning for a first title win, was to meet Vondrousova in the quarter-final. However, the defending champion’s early exit has changed this equation now.
