A few months ago, it seemed almost implausible to consider that Prashanth Neel's K.G.F: Chapter 2's box office records will be under any threat. As one of the all-time biggest commercial successes in Indian cinema, KGF 2 managed to set an almost-unsurpassable record of Rs. 183 crores (gross) in its home state of Karnataka in its pursuits to cross over Rs. 1200 crores worldwide.

But soon came Rishab Shetty's Kantara which has witnessed a stellar unprecedented growth at the box office to become a phenomenon of a kind. Reportedly made on a budget of close to Rs. 15 crores (as opposed to the Rs. 100 crore budget of KGF 2), the film is now inches away from grossing Rs. 400 crores at the global box office with Kantara Hindi, the dubbed version, simultaneously eyeing the Rs. 100 crore mark. And to top things off, Kantara is only inches away from defeating K.G.F: Chapter 2 to become the highest-grossing film in Karnataka!

Yes, as revealed by the latest trade reports, Kantara stands behind the Rocking Star Yash-starrer KGF 2 only by a small margin but looks well-placed to take over the reins in a matter of a few days.

The second instalment of the Rocky Bhai saga, as per the reports, grossed Rs. 182.9 crores during its theatrical run in Karnataka and Kantara, in the same vein, recently went past Rs. 174 crores (gross). The new milestone is at arm's reach for Rishab Shetty & Co. and to further boost the chances, Kantara is likely to face very little competition at the Karnataka box office in November.

Kantara has already outdone KGF 2 in terms of footfalls in theatres and as revealed by the team recently, the film has managed to sell more than 1 crore tickets. Owing to this staggering theatrical run, recent reports have suggested that Hombale Films are re-negotiating their OTT deal with Amazon Prime Video: the digital premiere date of the film, however, still remains a secret.
