A hat trick by Kylian Mbappe and a goal in the penalty shootout had surely helped France, but he alone could not do much as the night belonged to Lionel Messi. Argentina wanted to win this game for Messi and they did it as the side beat France 4-2 on penalties to lift the FIFA World Cup 2022 at the Lusail Stadium on Sunday.

This was the only trophy that was missing from Messi's cabinet and now he has achieved that as well.

The first half saw Messi and Angel di Maria give Argentina a 2-0 lead, however, two quick strikes from Mbappe saw France pull themselves level 2-2.

For the majority of the game, France had a lifeless appearance, but late in the second half, they regained their spark. In the final minute of regulation time, the scores were still 2-2.

The extra-time saw Messi score in the 109 minute, but Mbappe struck in the second half of the extra time to make it 3-3 for France.

Going into the penalties, France got the chance to shoot first and Mbappe took the first penalty and beat Emiliano Martinez to put France 1-0 up.

But he was followed by Messi, who took the first penalty for Argentina and marginally beat Hugo Lloris to make it 1-1.

Bayern Munich winger Kingsley Coman came in for France to take the shot but was denied by Emiliano Martinez and it was the first miss of the shootout.

Paulo Dybala, who was on the bench, was brought in right before the final whistle and took the second strike, He defeated Lloris to make it 2-1 for Argentina.

Argentina could sense victory as Tchouameni missed his spot-kick too seeing Argentina lead 2-1 but it soon turned to 3-1 as Leandro Paredes puts Argentina ahead.

France, however, still needed to score and even save the next, and Kolo Muani did just that making the score 2-3.

But it all came down to Montel, who scored the match-winning penalty for Argentina, making it 4-2 in the penalty shootout. With this, Argentina won its third FIFA World Cup title.
