Bollywood releases, especially the tent pole ones have curiosity and anticipation attached to them throughout the year, whenever they release. However, there are certain release windows and days that have the excitement meter touching its threshold. Yes, we are talking about the highlighted ones. One of the most revered days of them all is the day of Eid. For years superstars have been trying their luck on the Eid release. Most of the time they win gold sometimes they don’t, but the excitement attached to the date remains the same. With time the date has become synonymous with Salman Khan's release but this year is it Akshay Kumar, Tiger Shroff, and Ajay Devgn marking their attendance with Bade Miyan Chote Miyan and Maidaan respectively.

So technically, 2024 is the year with no release from the Khan Stars. But this has happened after a long time as Salman has had a release every Eid in normal times barring the time spent fighting the pandemic in the past couple of years. But this is not the first time either. Before the Salman Khan stamp on Eid became a thing, there were varied films from varied stars released on the big screen on Eid every year. Some of them even turned out to be blockbusters and went on to achieve cult status in years to come.

So today as we begin the countdown to Eid and the big clash that awaits between Bade Miyan Chote Miyan and Maidaan, let’s take a look at five non-Khan movies that hit the big screen on Eid and turned out to be success stories.

Beta (1992)

Cast: Anil Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit, and Aruna Irani.

Director: Indra Kumar.

Streaming on: Amazon Prime Video.

Anil Kapoor and Madhuri led Beta in a way that made the entire industry realize the importance of Eid release because this was technically the first movie that was released in Eid in the 90s and earned a whopping box office collection. The movie that has us our Dhak Dhak girl earned a smashing Rs 10 crore at the box office back in the day and was called a blockbuster for the same.

Anari (1993)

Cast: Venkatesh Daggubati, Karisma Kapoor, and Rakhi.

Director: K. Muralimohana Rao.

Streaming on: Amazon Prime Video.

Anari has to be the most fascinating one on this list. Exactly a year later, Venkatesh Daggubati decided to make his Bollywood debut and for that, he had Karisma Kapoor by his side. Someone could call this a risk in first thought but the movie was released and it earned Rs 3 crore at the box office claiming the Hit title.

Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001)

Cast: Hrithik Roshan, Shah Rukh Khan, Kareena Kapoor Khan, and Rani Mukerji.

Director: Karan Johar.

Streaming on: Netflix.

What are the odds that Karan Johar marked his movie on Eid at the beginning of a new century and a decade? The movie became a cult in no time and changed the pop culture fabric of the country back in the day. Every girl wanted to and still wants to be Poo, while guys daydream of achieving a physique like Hrithik Roshan. Do we need to elaborate on Shah Rukh Khan’s charm? All of this resulted in the film turning out to be a blockbuster with a collection that was around Rs 55 crore.

Bhool Bhulaiyaa (2007)

Cast: Akshay Kumar, Vidya Balan, and Ameesha Patel.

Director: Priyadarshan.

Streaming on: YouTube (on rent)

Bhool Bhulaiyaa introduced the country to a new genre and the movie was a big hit in no time. Akshay Kumar and Vidya Balan became sought-after stars overnight as the movie cashed in Rs 49 crore and became a super hit. The film is now an entire franchise and Balan is returning for the third part that is in production as we speak.

Laaga Chunari Mein Daag (2007)

Cast: Rani Mukerji, Abhishek Bachchan, Konkona Sen Sharma, and Kunal Kapoor.

Director: Pradeep Sarkar.

Streaming on: Amazon Prime Video.

Pradeep Sarkar made an experimental movie with a star as big as Rani Mukerji and released it on Eid. The movie clashed with Bhool Bhulaiyaa and couldn’t stand the pressure at the Indian box office. However, the overseas collection of the movie saved it and made it very profitable. Made at a budget of around Rs 15 crore, Laaga Chunari Mein Daag earned Rs 35.98 crore at the global box office.

This year, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan and Maidaan will clash at the box office on April 10, 2024. Stay tuned to OTTplay for more content like this and everything else from the world of streaming and films.
