Back in 2021, Adarsh Gourav took the world by storm with his incredible performance as Balram Halwai in The White Tiger, which premiered on Netflix. The actor also received a nomination at the BAFTA Awards for Best Actor in a Leading Role. Earlier this year, the actor was also featured in the Apple TV+ anthology series Extrapolations. Adarsh has created a mark internationally that talks about how inclusivity has become better in the global entertainment industry, defying typecasting in every possible way.

So during an exclusive interview with OTTplay, the actor was asked about the inclusivity of Indian projects and how that has been a topic of discussion for quite some time now. Adarsh told us, "I feel that when a story is being told about a specific region, it makes sense to cast actors from that region because those actors sort of understand that language and that belt much better than an actor (who is not from that region). Say, for example, that the story is being told about Punjab. It makes more sense for actors from Punjab to be part of that story."

On being a "selfish" actor

The Hostel Daze actor further said, "I would selfishly say that I want to be a part of any story that's being told, in any part of the country or even the world, given the fact that I'm given enough time to transform and sort of understand and learn that. So I wouldn't ever want to get into something for the sake of inclusivity or be a part of something without being adequately prepped for it. So if I'm playing something that's not from Mumbai or from Jamshedpur, both the cities that I know, well, I would need enough time as an actor to get that and to get a grasp on it, and then to be able to play it so that it's done accurately."

How life changed after The White Tiger

Adarsh was also asked how opportunities got better internationally. To which the actor stated, "Definitely. I mean, I got representation in LA, and I got representation in London. So my dream of working internationally has moved one step closer to (becoming a reality.) I feel like I'm getting more auditions and opportunities from all over the world, not just India. So yeah, what The White Tiger has done is given me access to, like, these doors that were closed, and people that seemed really far away from me are now more reachable, and I can, if not work with them, at least meet them and create an impression and audition. And then I feel like it ultimately boils down to your hustle and your hard work."

Upcoming projects

Adarsh will next be seen in Alien, an upcoming series that will premiere on Hulu. The actor will also feature in Kho Gaye Hum Kahan, co-starring Siddhant Chaturvedi and Ananya Panday.
