Director AR Murugadoss, who has been staying away from the limelight after the release of Darbar in 2020, surprised one and all when he announced his production venture 1947 August 16. Gautham Karthik plays the lead in the period film which revolves around an unexplored story in the history of Indian freedom struggle.

The makers have now unveiled its trailer from the social media pages of Karthi and Anirudh Ravichander. The two-minute promo video offers a sneak peek into the movie's plot. The story happens in Sengadu village where the British purposefully didn't inform the residents about India becoming an independent country.

The struggles, deception and agitation that followed form the film's plot. Pugazh, Revathy Sharma, Richard Ashton and Jason Shah among others essay pivotal roles in the ambitious project which has been helmed by NS Ponkumar. Om Prakash Bhatt and Narsiram Choudhary have produced the project along with Murugadoss.

Selvakumar SK and Sudharsan R have handled cinematography and editing respectively for 1947 August 16 which has music composed by Sean Roldan. Rajasekhar has helmed action episodes while Dinesh has choreographed dance sequences. The film will be Gautham Karthik's second outing this year after Pathu Thala which will be released on March 30.

1947 August 16 will hit the screens a week later, on April 7. Surprisingly, a movie of this scale is releasing only in Tamil, unlike many other projects which are eyeing pan Indian markets. This is the second time Gautham has teamed up with Murugadoss; the former had earlier played the lead in the latter's production venture Rangoon.

Movie buffs are curious to know if makers would come up with dubbing versions in other languages as well. The team is likely to kick start promotions soon.
