Malayalam star Tovino Thomas's latest Malayalam movie is set to create a new benchmark at the box office . Powered by magnificent word of mouth, the movie is growing from strength to strength at the global box office. And it's poised to cross the coveted Rs 100 crore mark at the box office. The commercial success of this scale is significant for the industry given that no recent Malayalam movies have managed to perform so well at the ticket windows.

While other South Indian languages have expanded their domestic and global market share significantly, the Malayalam film industry still hasn't found a wider theatrical appeal despite its strong reputation for making great movies. And the success of 2018 should come as a big boost to the morale of the film industry.

2018 has lifted the gloom at the Kerala box office with a big hit. It was director Mani Ratnam's epic Ponniyin Selvan 2 that brought cheers to all the stakeholders. And later 2018 movie arrived earlier this month and took over the cinemas in the state.

2018 became one of the fastest movies to gross Rs 50 crore in ticket sales. It crossed that milestone at the box office within 7 days of its release. It could have achieved this feat faster, only if the filmmakers had given this movie a wider release. The movie was given rather a soft release in the state and across the world. The filmmakers didn't make any promotional efforts despite this movie being bigger in terms of scale and scope. And thanks to rave reviews and strong word of mouth, the movie took off at the box office.

2018 has already raked in about Rs 80 crore from its worldwide ticket sales and it's only growing stronger.

Written and directed by Jude Anthany Joseph, the film also stars Kunchacko Boban, Asif Ali, Vineeth Sreenivasan, Aparna Balamurali, Kalaiyarasan, Narain, Lal, Indrans and Aju Varghese.
