There is going to be a deluge of epic period dramas in Mollywood! Malayalam filmmakers and actors have been teasing audiences with announcements of several period films. From Mohanlal’s Vrushabha to Jayasurya’s Kathanar: The Wild Sorcerer, Malayalam cinephiles have exciting releases awaiting them in 2024. With Mohanlal ready to deliver three mammoth-budget films next year, there are also some interesting period dramas with huge budgets that will hit the big screen soon.
As we are in the final month of 2023, here's a look at the 5 most anticipated Malayalam period dramas that will be released in theatres in 2024:
Vrushabha
Directed by Nanda Kishore
Mohanlal, Shanaya Kapoor, Zahrah S Khan, Meka Srikanth, Ragini Dwivedi, and Ramachandra Raju play significant roles in Nanda Kishore's pan-Indian period film Vrushaba. Shanaya Kapoor, the daughter of Bollywood actor Sanjay Kapoor, makes her acting debut in this epic action drama. The film, which revolves around two enemies who are reborn as father and son, is a multilingual project.
Ajayante Randam Moshanam
Directed by Jithin Laal
Tovino Thomas stars in this high-budget period drama, which will be multilingual. Helmed by Jithin Laal, the movie revolves around Maniyan, Kunjikelu and Ajayan, all of whom are reportedly trying to protect the most important treasure of the land. Tovino will be seen in a triple role for the first time in his career in Ajayante Randam Moshanam. The film also stars Surabhi Lakshmi, Kriti Shetty and Aishwarya Rajesh, who are the female leads.
Malaikottai Vaaliban
Directed by Lijo Jose Pellissery
Lijo Jose Pellissery, known for his work in Jallikattu, is directing another historical fantasy drama starring Mohanlal. Malaikottai Vaaliban is set in the pre-independence era. The film also stars Bollywood actress Sonalee Kulkarni, who plays the female lead. Mohanlal plays a double role after a long gap in Malaikottai Vaaliban.
Kathanar- The Wild Sorcerer
Directed by Rojin Thomas
Kathanar - The Wild Sorcerer is a fantasy horror film directed by Home-fame Rojin Thomas. The film is headlined by Jayasurya and also stars Anushka Shetty, Jiyad Irani and Vineeth in pivotal roles. The film is based on the story of the legendary 9th-century Christian priest Kadamattathu Kathanar. JJ Park, who has worked on The Last of Us and Shazam, is the action director of the film.
Barroz
Directed by Mohanlal
Barroz is yet another epic fantasy film, which is superstar Mohanlal's directorial debut. It is based on the novel Barroz: Guardian of D'Gama's Treasure by Jijo Punnoose. It stars Mohanlal in the titular role, with Maya, Cesar Lorente Raton, Kallirroi Tziafeta, Tuhin Menon, and Guru Somasundaram in significant roles. Mark Kilian composed the original score, which features songs by Lydian Nadhaswaram.
