Malayalam superstar Mammootty’s next is an investigative drama, titled Kannur Squad, which is all set to hit the cinemas on September 28. The film marks cinematographer Roby Varghese Raj’s directorial debut. The plot follows police personnel chasing a group of criminals. Kannur Squad takes us on a journey with these officers as they work to apprehend the criminals.
The movie also features Azeez Nedumangad, Rony David, Vijayaraghavan and Shabareesh Varma in key roles. Here are some of the reasons you must watch Kannur Squad in the theatres.
1. Mammootty appears as a realistic cop, after Unda
As films now become more realistic, the changes are also visible in the characters. Previously, most police officers were depicted as supercops who overpowered everyone and saved the victims. However, scriptwriters, directors and actors now approach the characters differently.
The police officer, Manikandan, in the film Unda is an example of that. He is portrayed as a cop who is worried about his own life in adverse situations, which is a more humanising representation. However, in the film’s climax, Manikandan steps up for his survival. In the trailer for Kannur Squad, Mammootty appears to be a more realistic police officer rather than a supercop in his earlier films like Rakshasarajavu, Inspector Balram and Christopher. This change in approach might be refreshing to watch.
2. Sushin Shyam’s music
Lately, Sushin Shyam is counted among the most well-known music composers in Malayalam cinema. His composition for Romancham was lauded for its unique approach and treatment. The fast-paced classical and electronic music in Amal Neerad’s Bheeshma Parvam also garnered a lot of attention from the audience. When it comes to Kannur Squad, which is a thrilling manhunt narrative, Sushin is expected to create his magic once again.
3. Kannur Squad is inspired by actual events
Kannur Squad is a wing that was set up by the Kerala cadre police officer S Sreejith while he was working in Kannur. The incidents in the film are inspired by real events. The cast and crew had met the real officers in the wing before the shoot. According to the makers, 80% of the film is based on events that have actually happened in real life, to which they added cinematic flavours and connected them with a storyline.
4. Kannur Squad is an investigative thriller
Kannur Squad is an investigative thriller. Even though Malayalam cinema is known for its investigative films, this movie also combines elements of travel. Rajeev Ravi’s recently released film Kuttavum Shikshayum was a realistic, investigative road drama, but it failed to entertain the audience due to its slow pace. Unlike Kuttavum Shikshayum, Kannur Squad’s trailer promises an eventful, fast-paced film with thrilling scenes and intriguing moments.
