Karthik Subbaraj's cult film Jigarthanda is all set to have a special screening in Chennai tomorrow (on August 1). The 2014 action comedy stars Siddharth and Bobby Simha in the lead. The special screening will be held at one of the movie halls in Royapettah, Chennai which the film's director Karthik Subbaraj will also attend.
The plot revolves around Karthik Subramani (Siddharth) who is asked to come up with a gripping gangster flick with a heavy dosage of violence. When Karthik travels to Madurai, he comes across Assault Sethu (Bobby Simha), who is a ruthless gangster in real life. As Karthi gains an insight into Sethu's life and gets caught in the mêlée following the discovery of a mole in Sethu's gang.
Bobby Simha won the National Award for the Best Supporting Actor for his role and Vivek Harshan bagged the award for the Best Editing. The rest of the star cast included Lakshmi Menon, Karunakaran, Guru Somasundaram, Aadukalam Naren to name a few. The film became a major milestone in Karthik Subbaraj's career.
Jigarthanda was remade in Kannada with the same title, in Telugu as Gaddalakonda Ganesh, and as Bachchhan Paandey in Hindi.
In the meantime, a standalone sequel to the film, Jigarthanda Double X is in the making. The film brings together SJ Suryah and Lawrence Raghavendra and is set in the '60s or '70s. While SJ Suryah seems to play a shifty gangster, Raghava Lawrence plays a ruffian. Both seem to have enough heft on their own, going by the promo released by the team.
Music for the film is by Santhosh Narayanan, cinematography by S Thirunavukkarasu. Jigarthanda Double X is produced by Kaarthekeyen Santhanam & Kathiresan, and presented by Karthik Subbaraj's Stone Bench Films. Jigarthanda Double X is one of the most awaited projects of the year.
