There were several firsts during this year's awards show. Adrien Brody, who starred in The Brutalist, became the first actor to win two best actor prizes in a row, defeating Timothée Chalamet, who had a nomination for A Complete Unknown.
As a result of his work on Wicked, Paul Tazewell became the first Black man to ever receive an Oscar for costume design. Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, who play leading roles in the film, kicked off the event by playing three songs pertaining to the Wizard of Oz.
Zoe Saldana became the first American of Dominican origin to win an Oscar, hoisting a statue for her work in Netflix's Emilia Pérez. Flow became the first Latvian film to take an Oscar, winning best animated feature.
The evening was a celebration of diversity, with victories for Iranian (In the Shadow of the Cypress) and Brazilian (I'm Still Here) directors. Documentary filmmakers from Israel and Palestine collaborated on No Other Land, which won best documentary, and follows the eviction of Palestinian and Israeli communities from the West Bank at the hands of the Israeli military.
With competition from The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown, Conclave, Dune: Part Two, Emilia Pérez, I'm Still Here, Nickel Boys, The Substance, and Wicked, Anora was declared the winner of the best film trophy.
