Oscar season is almost here, and after much discussion over the nominations from the past few months, you will soon watch the 97th Academy Awards ceremony live on OTT in India. The prestigious awards event is set to be held on March 2, 2025, in the US, which means it will be streamed live in India on March 3, 2025, early in the morning, in the newly merged JioHotstar.

Dolby Theatre to host the 97th Academy Awards

The Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles, will host the Academy Awards ceremony produced by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). The AMPAS will celebrate films from 2024 in 23 categories with Oscars during the ceremony. The show will be hosted for the first time by comedian and podcaster Conan O'Brien.

Wicked and The Brutalist both garnered ten nominations apiece, while Emilia Pérez took home thirteen.

Historic moment for non-English films

With twelve nominations, Emilia Pérez surpassed Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) and Roma (2018), the two films that had previously held the record for most non-English language Oscar nominations. Karla Sofía Gascón, an actress from Spain, made history by being the first openly transgender artist to receive an acting nomination for her role in the film. It has never happened before that two films have been nominated for both Best Picture and Best International Feature Film in the same year; Emilia Pérez and I'm Still Here are the tenth and eleventh non-English language films to do so.

Timothée Chalamet became the youngest actor to be nominated for Best Actor twice since James Dean in 1957 at the age of 29, surpassing Dean's record. The body horror parody The Substance, directed by Coralie Fargeat, made her the ninth woman to get a Best Director nomination. The film I'm Still Here made history by being nominated for Best Picture in a language other than Portuguese. Nominations for Best Animated Feature and Best International Feature Film were shared by Flow and Flee (2021), making it the second animated feature to do so.

First-time and multiple Best Director nominees

The eighth person to receive four nominations in a single year was Jacques Audiard (for Emilia Pérez), and the ninth person to accomplish the same was Sean Baker (for Anora). James Mangold (for A Complete Unknown), Brady Corbet (for The Brutalist), Fargeat, and Audiard are all up for Best Director; Mangold, Baker, and James Corbet are all first-timers in the category. Mangold, Fargeat, and Brady Corbet have all garnered three nominations apiece.

In 1998, there was a completely fresh crop of nominees for the director's chair. It hasn't happened since 1978 that every film starring a Best Actress nominee has also received a Best Picture nomination. Andy Nelson, who has 25 nominations overall, is second only to John Williams (54) for the most nominations for a living person. He was nominated for Wicked, solidifying his status as one of the Academy's most decorated individuals.
