Eminent classical vocalist Ustad Rashid Khan passed away on Tuesday at around 3:45 pm at a private hospital in south Kolkata. The vocalist was 56. After suffering from cancer for years, the musician suffered a brain stroke in November last year. He was rushed to a hospital and was admitted there ever since. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, and a son. 

Rashid Khan was born on July 1, 1968, in Uttar Pradesh. He came to Kolkata when he was 10-11 years old. He was trained under Ustad Nisar Hussain Khan Sahib, his grandfather, under Rampur-Sahaswan Gharana. He earned a scholarship from Sangeet Research Academy in Kolkata and lived in the City of Joy since then.  

Besides his prolific journey as one of the eminent vocalists in Indian classical music, Ustad Rashid Khan became a household name with his film music. His rendition of Aaoge Jab Tum from Shahid-Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor’s Jab We Met is considered one of the greatest hits of all time. In 2006, Ustad Rashid Khan was awarded the Padma Shri and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award. He was awarded India’s third highest civilian award, Padma Bhushan, in 2022 by the Indian Government in the field of Art.
