Manoj Bharathiraja, actor and son of veteran filmmaker Bharathiraja, died during the evening hours of Tuesday, putting the Tamil film industry to shock. The actor suffered from heart attack at around 6 pm and died at his residence in Chennai.

Manoj Bharathiraja, who predominantly worked in the Tamil film industry, and son of veteran filmmaker Bharathiraja, died on Tuesday evening, after suffering from cardiac arrest. He was 48 at the time of demise. Manoj was last seen in Snakes and Ladders Tamil web series which released in 2024.

Manoj Bharathiraja worked as assistant to his father. But he did not follow his father’s path as director and but was eventually launched as an actor by Bharathiraja in the 1999 Tamil film Taj Mahal. The film starred actors Riya Sen, Revathi, Radhika, and Ranjitha, and was written by Mani Ratnam. The film gave Manoj the much-needed opening debut for Manoj, b ut failed to win at the box office. Subsequently, he went on to act in a number of Tamil films including Samudhiram, Alli Arjuna, Maha Nadigan and Eeswaran. He also paired up with actors Silambarasan and Karthi in films like Maanaadu and Viruman respectively.

Manoj is survived by his wife Ashwathi and two daughters. Arshitha and Mathivadhani. His demise came as a shocker to the film industry, who have been pouring in their condolences.

Manoj Bharathiraja’s OTT debut Snakes and Ladders

Manoj made his OTT debut with the web series Snakes and Ladders, which remains to be the last work the late actor seen in. The series, produced by Karthik Subbaraj, is available for streaming on Prime Video.

The show is created by Kamala Alchemis and Dhivakar Kamal with Ashok Veerapan, Bharath Muralidharan and Kamala Alchemis directing it. The series revolves around a group of school-going children caught in a web of crimes.
