While The Kerala Story has been gaining momentum at the box office in northern India, the film has been struggling to make an impact in the southern states, particularly in Kerala. The movie seems to have failed to strike a chord with the audience in the region, resulting in fewer viewers and a lower box office collection.

Even though the movie is said to be inspired by true events in Kerala, the movie has not found acceptance among movie buffs in God's own country. According to reports, the movie may not cross Rs 50 lakh in collection at the Kerala box office. Despite being in the news cycle for weeks now, it has not been able to catch the imagination of the audience in the South.

Despite some momentum in Bengaluru multiplexes, The Kerala Story has not resonated well in other neighbouring cities. The movie's buzz in the Telugu state is also not up to the mark, and there are no reports about its box office performance in Telugu states.

The Kerala Story was withdrawn from cinemas across Tamil Nadu just a few days after its release citing "potential law and order issues and lack of reception from the general public as reasons for the move”. And the movie was also given cold shoulders by the movie buffs in Kerala.

"#TheKeralaStory in 7 days: a disappointing 35 Lakh approx collection from Kerala with only 23K admissions, proving even fervent social media supporters didn't show up to the theater. Total Rejection!," tweeted Snehasallapam, a popular Kerala box office tracker.

However, The Kerala Story seems to be the top choice for the audience in the Hindi belt. The movie has raked in a whopping Rs 100 plus crore from its worldwide ticket sales so far.

"#TheKeralaStory is a ONE-HORSE RACE... Has a SUPER-SOLID [second] Sat, cruises past ₹ cr in style… The BIG JUMP was on the cards, given the trends… Biz on [second] Sun should be HUGE again… [Week 2] Fri 12.35 cr, Sat 19.50 cr. Total: ₹ 112.99 cr. #India biz. #Boxoffice," tweeted trade analyst Taran Adarsh.

Meanwhile, movie buffs across the country are also embracing another Kerala story at the box office: 2018. Starring Tovino Thomas in the lead, the movie is a big hit already. And it has raked in over Rs 80 crore so far . The film is set to cross Rs 100 crore in its global collection soon. 2018 movie has raked in over Rs 34 crore in Kerala alone.
