After touring across the global film festivals, Abhinandan Banerjee’s Manikbabur Megh was released in theatres on July 12. The critically acclaimed film features Chandan Sen, Debesh Roy Chowdhury, Arun Guha Thakurta, Nimai Ghosh, Bratya Basu, and others. The film delves into the surreal romance between a man, Manikbabu, and a whiff of cloud.

The film was shot and toured years ago. In fact, Manikbabur Megh was screened at the Kolkata International Film Festival. However, the makers – Abhinandan and producer-duo Bauddhayan Mukherji and Monalisa Mukherji – took their time to release it in India. On July 12, the film will be released in theatres in West Bengal, Gurgaon, Bangalore, Mumbai and other places.

Meanwhile, Abhinandan has been busy with his other works. He has collaborated with Naren Kumar – a producer who has Jolly LLB and Maharani (streams on SonyLiv) – for a Hindi feature film and a web series. Talking to OTTplay, Abhonandan said, “We are at the last leg of the screenplay writing. If all goes well, the shooting of the series will start in January. Once the OTT platform is finalised, we will lock the cast. The production team of Naren Kumar is in talks with two national platforms. Along with the web series, we are also planning a Hindi feature film.”

Manikbabur Megh is essentially an independent endeavour. Will Abhinandan step aside from such filmmaking. The director assured that he would not. On the contrary, he has already started working on his next project. “I want to make my independent films in Bengali while being committed to the global film language. After living outside of Kolkata for a long time, I prefer to make my films in Bengali. I feel like home. I have started writing. It is going to take time. In fact, these projects take a lot of time. This time, I want to co-produce the film.” he said.
