Agent on OTT: Nearly two years after the theatrical release of the Akhil Akkineni-led Telugu film, it has finally dropped on OTT and there’s no dearth of brickbats

Audiences did not warm up to Akhil Akkineni’s Agent when it released in theatres, making it the biggest box office disaster of his career so far. Such was the loss the film incurred that it was caught in a tussle between the makers and distributors for nearly two years, which delayed its OTT release as well. The film had been picked up by Sony LIV, with the platform attempting to release it multiple times. It finally dropped in the evening of March 13, 2025 and if the responses from those who chose to watch it on OTT are anything to go by, the hate for the Surender Reddy directorial continues.
What is interesting, though, is that this time around, a lot of the trolling is directed at Malayalam superstar Mammootty who has a pivotal role in the film. He plays the RAW chief, Col Mahadev, who unofficially recruits Ramakrishna, aka Ricky, dubbed Wild Saala (Akhil) for a mission. Mammootty’s fans in Kerala have been going to town on social media, about his perceived lack of interest in the proceedings and the implausible sequences in the film.
“Ikka as Devil Madadev is insufferable”, read a comment, while another wondered if Malayalam actors forget acting when they work in other language films or if that is how filmmakers there make them act. A third wrote, “Managed to watch 1 hour before realizing my Star Health insurance doesn’t cover this kind of suffering.” Many also saw humour in the action sequences involving the actor, stating that the way he was holding a rifle looked like he was handling a party popper.
Agent follows Wild Saala, as he tracks down Dharma, a rogue RAW agent, played by Dino Morea who is looking at causing chaos with a deadly virus. The film also stars Sakshi Vaidya, Vikramjeet Virk, Denzil Smith, Sampath Raj, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, Anu Prabhakar, Vennela Kishore, Posani Murali Krishna, P Sai Kumar, Murali Sharma and others, while Urvarshi Rautela was seen in the special number Wild Saala.
