Chandramukhi 2 is all set to have its digital premiere this week. Starring Ragava Lawrance and Kangana Ranaut in the lead roles, the movie will become available for streaming on Netflix starting October 26.
This movie had a huge legacy to live up to, given Chandramukhi (2005), starring Superstar Rajinikanth in the lead, has a cult following in Tamil cinema. The comparisons between these two movies were inevitable, with Lawrance tasked with stepping into the shoes of Vettaiyan Raja, a character immortalized by Rajinikanth's exceptional performance.
As expected when Chandramukhi 2 was released in cinemas it garnered mixed reactions, sparking a meme fest on the internet. If you are planning to watch the movie when it arrives on streaming, you might enjoy the movie better than the theatre audience if you keep these tips of director P Vasu in mind.
In a recent interview, he urged the audience to approach the sequel with an open mind: "Before the release (of Chandramukhi 2), I requested everyone to forget part 1 and watch this film. People watched the original movie with no expectations, and I encouraged them to extend the same courtesy to this film."
Vasu emphasised that the two movies are very different and should be viewed as such. "If you watch Chandramukhi 2 as a prequel to Chandramukhi 1, you will like it. But, since it's called the second part, you may have certain expectations. Forget about the first part while watching this movie," he added.
Vasu gets nostalgic about Chandramuki
Vasu said that Chandramukhi 2 resonated with its intended audience — the family crowd. He recalled Rajinikanth's Chandramukhi also faced a similar challenge back in the day.
"You know for Chandramuki we had only 50 per cent occupancy on the first Saturday. The first day we had a good showing and the second day witnessed a significant drop, with night show attendance falling to 20-25 percent. And after Monday, ladies started going to theatres and things changed," Vasu recalled.
Even though the audience and critics gave Chandramukhi 2 mixed reviews, the movie received a favourable reaction from Rajinikanth himself.
"Rajini sir called and appreciated me after he watched the movie. He said that the movie has come out well and it will appeal to families, ladies and children. Then, I asked him if he could issue a public statement about the movie and he immediately sent me a letter of appreciation for the movie," Vasu recalled.
