Though there were releases like Sivakarthikeyan's Doctor, Rajinikanth's Annaatthe and Silambarasan's Maanaadu, Ajith-starrer Valimai is considered as the biggest theatrical release in Kollywood post the second lockdown. There has been unprecedented hype for the movie from the time it went on floors.
The action thriller is said to have surpassed the previous movies of Ajith in terms of pre release business. Unlike the star's previous outings, the film directed by H Vinoth will release in Telugu, Hindi and Kannada, too, on the same day. While there are no big Kannada releases this week, Bheemla Nayak and Gangubai Kathiawadi are expected to pose challenge to Valimai in Tollywood and Bollywood respectively.
Ajith's current highest grossing film is Siva's Viswasam (streaming on Amazon Prime Video) which released along with Rajinikanth's Petta (streaming on Netflix). Fans of the star are hopeful that Valimai will surpass Viswasam by a comfortable margin, given its solo release.
This is also the star's release after more than two and a half years. Nerkonda Paarvai (streaming on Zee5), which was also directed by Vinoth, was his last released movie. However, since the movie was a remake of Pink, fans weren't fully satisfied with it, as it lacked several elements they expect from their matinee idol.
Meanwhile, Ajith's arch rival at the box office, Vijay, has had two releases, Bigil (streaming on Amazon Prime Video) and Master (streaming on Amazon Prime Video), post the former's last release. Despite 50 per cent occupancy, Master, which opened to rave reviews, went on to collect more than 200 crores.
With 100 per cent occupancy in Tamil Nadu theatres, the trade is looking forward to the crazy numbers Valimai will earn on its first day and weekend. Ajith's fans are confident that the movie will break the existing Day 1 records in Tamil Nadu. The shows will be screened from as early as 4 am on February 24.
