Animal director Sandeep Reddy Vanga takes a swipe at Parvathy Thiruvothu, questions her film knowledge

Sandeep Reddy Vanga continues to vehemently defend his latest film, Animal, amid the ongoing debate about the movie's societal impact. In the latest series of comments, Sandeep criticized several high-profile Bollywood figures, including Aamir Khan, Kiran Rao, and Javed Akhtar. 

However, in an unexpected turn, Sandeep also took a swipe at Malayalam actor Parvathy Thiruvothu for her disapproval of his previous movie, Arjun Reddy/Kabir Singh.

Sandeep Reddy Vanga slams Parvathy Thiruvothu

Sandeep showed no hesitation in mentioning her name and critiquing her for a comment she made a few years ago. During a recent interview discussing allegations of violence glorification in his movies, Sandeep suggested that many lack the knowledge to judge a film.

"People don’t understand what glorification means. They expect a lecture from the hero in the climax, where he admits to all his mistakes. They expect the hero to die a dog’s death. Forget regular people, even actors don’t understand this," he said in an interview with Siddharth Kannan.

Sandeep went on to recall a comment Parvathy made a few years ago, expressing his displeasure while suggesting her film literacy left much to be desired.

What did Parvathy Thiruvothu say about Arjun Reddy/Kabir Singh?

“There was one Malayalam actor, Parvathy Thiruvothu, I think her name was. She said in an interview that Joker didn’t glorify killing. When Joker dances on the stairs while a song plays, she doesn’t think that is glorification. I was shocked. She’s a very good actor, and if someone like her can feel Joker doesn’t glorify violence but Kabir Singh does, then what can we expect of the general public," he said.

During a roundtable interview with Film Companion in 2019, Parvathy expressed her views stating at no point did she feel that what Joaquin Phoenix's character was right while watching Joker, even though the movie was rated 'R' for violence. However, she noted that the visual grammar of Arjun Reddy and Kabir Singh was so problematic that it glorified flawed gender politics.

Animal, starring Ranbir Kapoor in the lead, was released last year to polarizing reviews. However, that did not prevent the movie from becoming one of the highest-grossing films in the history of Hindi cinema.

Animal is now streaming on Netflix.
