Netflix on Sunday announced the premiere date of its latest Tamil offering Annapoorani: The Goddess of Food. Starring Nayanthara in the lead role, the film will start streaming on the platform on December 29. The original Tamil film will also be available for streaming in Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi.

Debutant filmmaker Nilesh Krishnaa has written and directed Annapoorani. Nilesh assisted director Shankar for many years before he ventured on his own with Annapoorani.

Earlier in an interview, Nilesh revealed that he was inspired to make a film on the art and science of culinary after concluding that this was one of the rarely explored subjects on Indian celluloid.

Annapoorani revolves around a girl who aspires to become one of the top chefs in the country. Nayanthara has essayed the lead role, while it stars Jai as the male lead. In the meantime, seasoned actor Sathyaraj has played a key supporting role., It's noteworthy that Nayanthara, Jai and Sathyaraj have reunited on the big screen after a gap of 10 years. The trio had shared the screen space in the 2013 movie Raja Rani, which marked the directorial debut of Atlee, also a former student of director Shankar.

Judging from the trailer, it seems Nilesh has explored the religious and political beliefs surrounding food. Annapoorani, played by Nayanthara, has nurtured the ambition of becoming a chef since her childhood. Despite her fervent desire, her traditional family imposes restrictions, thwarting her aspirations. In a clever move, she deceives her controlling parents by fabricating plans to pursue an MBA while secretly enrolling in culinary arts. The plot thickens when her religious convictions, which forbid her from cooking meat, clash with her conservative parents' expectations. The central question arises: how will she navigate the emotional and societal hurdles to turn her culinary dream into reality?
