Arun Matheswaran: I was heavily influenced by yesteryear gangster films like Get Carter and Kill Bill

Filmmaker Arun Matheswaran, who made many heads turn with his debut flick Rocky, is all set to enthrall audiences with Saani Kaayidham, which is dropping on Amazon Prime Video on May 6. The performances of Selvaraghavan and Keerthy Suresh, who play lead roles in it, is expected to be the prime highlight of the film.   

In a release issued by the team, Arun said that the driving force behind making a revenge drama was the basic quest to understand human nature. Saani Kaayidham, according to him, is part of the revenge trilogy he wants to make.  

But revenge as a genre, he believes, is not new to Kollywood as it is something which has been explored extensively by many Tamil filmmakers. Having said that, Arun feels the manner in which he treated the emotion of revenge in Rocky and Saani Kaayidham were quite different.

He said, "The violent scenes we generally come across in other movies are stylized. In Saani Kaayidham, I thought of experimenting with a different flavour. Luckily, the writing happened organically for me. I was particular that violence shouldn't be glorified and that it should only complement storytelling."

With the film, Arun tried to create an action drama which is inspired from yesteryear British gangster films like Mike Hodges' Get Carter and Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill. He added, "There are a few filmmakers that I have always admired. Jim Jarmusch is one of them. Similarly, Seijun Suzuki and Akira Kurosawa are two directors who have immensely inspired me." 

Arun said that he wanted to incorporate some of the nuances those filmmakers relied on in their movies in Saani Kaayidham. Produced under the banner of Screen Scene Media Entertainment, Saani Kaayidham will be released as Chinni in Telugu and under the same title in Malayalam.
