The recent success of Ayushmann Khurrana's film Thamma has prompted him to discuss his future film projects and reflect on his reputation as a "producer-friendly" collaborator. The actor recently spoke with Cosmopolitan India about his varied schedule, which includes a commercial sequel, a movie with Yash Raj Films, and a partnership with seasoned filmmaker Sooraj Barjatya.

Ayushmann Khurrana's upcoming films

Khurrana has three separate projects in the works at the moment. The first is the comedy sequel, Pati Patni Aur Woh Do, the second installment in the franchise. As for his other upcoming projects, he will star in Yeh Prem Mol Liya, helmed by Sooraj Barjatya, a filmmaker well-known for his emphasis on conventional Indian family values. Khurrana elaborated on his enthusiasm for the projects by mentioning how the filmmaker's storytelling stands out in the present film industry.

"Pati Patni Aur Woh Do is a clean comedy commercial film. And nobody taps the tier-two, tier-three middle-class family like Sooraj Barjatya does. I’m a huge fan of his work. And with all this machismo around—which I personally enjoy watching—these films will stand out," he remarked.

Genre-breaking venture

In addition to these projects, Yash Raj Films (YRF) and Posham Pa Pictures are producing an untitled film featuring the actor. Khurrana said, "It’s a genre-breaker. It's the kind of film I've always wanted to do," describing this endeavour as different from his other work.

The actor insists that his method for choosing screenplays is based on a calculated evaluation of risk, even if he is now involved in larger-scale theatrical productions. Striking a balance between the "offbeat" character of his subjects and the commercial demands of the industry, he discussed the public's view of his career choices.

Balancing act

"I'm the quintessential risk-taker," asserted Khurrana. He went on to explain how he balances the needs of his producers financially with his own creative vision. "I'm a very producer-friendly actor; whenever I take on a project, it's always a plus—all vectors combined. So I guess you could call that playing it safe with the kind of risks I choose in terms of subject matter. But being a risk-taker also means taking care of the commercial aspect and aligning with the producer’s ideology," he added.

Khurrana has a long history of associating himself with "slice-of-life" films featuring likeable, decent heroes. The actor is ready to fight the public's perception of him based on this new "trope" that he admittedly helped create. Despite his extensive acting resume, he has never played a role that was either adversarial or ethically ambiguous.

Ayushmann Khurrana's new interest

"I've not really tried a front-footed grey character… I’ve been the 'sweet boy'," Khurrana confessed.
