Bloody Daddy star Shahid Kapoor on the Hollywood Dream: 'If somebody offers me a Tamil, Telugu or a Malayalam movie...'

Hindi film actor Shahid Kapoor is no stranger to experimentation, be it in the form of his choice of roles or the talent that he often chooses to work. In the recent past, especially, Kapoor has revealed his keenness to collaborate with south Indian filmmakers and this move, so to speak, has fetched him a lot of success as well. 

Kabir Singh, the Telugu remake of Arjun Reddy helmed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, was a big box-office success that also lent Shahid Kapoor a new lease on life as an actor. With Telugu director Gowtham Tinnanuri, he collaborated on the cricket drama Jersey and earned great reviews for his measured performance, even though the film could not yield great results at the box office. And not to forget his eventful foray into the OTT space through Farzi wherein he worked with the director duo Raj & DK and Tamil actor 'Makkal Selvan' Vijay Sethupathi.

Shahid Kapoor is also slated to work with Malayalam director Roshan Andrews on the latter's Hindi debut, which we hear has been titled Koi Shaq (also starring Pooja Hegde).

So, there's no denying that the Bloody Daddy actor is fond of South Indian talent and has steadily formed a niche, of sorts, for himself through these recent collaborations. In fact, by his own admission, he would rather pick a South Indian project instead of pursuing a Hollywood dream of some kind. "I am comfortable here, let me be honest," he said in a recent interview with a media outlet when asked whether he would be interested in auditioning for a Hollywood project at some point. With the likes of Priyanka Chopra and Alia Bhatt venturing out, would someone like Shahid Kapoor be willing to head 'westward' for a brief while?

"I've worked here for 20 years and I love my fraternity and I love the films. Having said that, I am here to do good work. So, on one hand, you are saying Hollywood (but) I will say the reverse thing: if somebody offers me a Tamil, Telugu or a Malayalam movie, and if I feel like there's a great role to do and it will satisfy me as an actor, I'd go do that. I don't want to say 'that is to be aspired towards' and 'this should not be aspired towards'. I don't think that's right," said Shahid Kapoor in the same interaction.

In the same vein he adds, "If you are chasing performance and calibre, I would not want to go to Hollywood and do some trash. "Abhi mujhe Hollywood mein break mil gaya toh kuch bhi karlo - nahi." (I've got a break in Hollywood so let me do whatever comes my way). There has to be a certain feeling from inside that you feel inspired and excited and challenged to do something, then language should not be a barrier. But language is a genuine thing - some people are good at making that transition, some people aren't. It's not easy to do that. So, you have to be honest to yourself about all these things and understand whether you can. But, I mean, if I would get an opportunity, I would go anywhere. Just give something exciting."

Shahid Kapoor will next be seen in Ali Abbas Zafar's Bloody Daddy which lands straight on OTT on June 9.
