According to recent reports, none of the legal battles over Border from 1997 will affect Border 2. The sequel starring Sunny Deol, Varun Dhawan, and Diljit Dosanjh sparked speculation earlier this week after film distributor Bharat Shah lodged a public notice against filmmaker JP Dutta. According to HT City, the notification asserted that Shah owned all copyrights for the initial installment as the World Rights Controller. It further warned that everyone who signs a deal with Dutta for the sequel should pay attention to the case's proceedings, which are now taking place in a civil court.

Nidhi Dutta's assurance on Border 2 moving forward

"No, this is not going to impact Border 2," producer-writer Nidhi Dutta, the filmmaker's daughter, assured the daily. This issue was not before the court, and after years of reviewing the evidence, the High Court finally decided to reject the case. According to the agreement, Bharat Shah should first pay the excess, but he hasn't done so for 27 years. If he confirms his commitment, they can move forward. Until then, he has no claim to anything pertaining to Border.

Full text of the notification appears in the September 7 issue of Complete Cinema magazine; it claims that on November 21, 1994, Bharat and Bina Bharat Shah agreed to have the film financed by JP Dutta. Both Shah and Dutta agreed to split the profits from Border when disagreements arose.

Bharat Shah's claims of unsettled financial updates and profits

As part of this agreement, Dutta was also required to keep the distributor updated on the film's financial status. The filmmaker allegedly failed to keep Shah informed of the film's financial status or distribute his portion of the earnings.

According to Nidhi Dutta, Border 2 will remain undisturbed by any legal difficulties, as the Bombay High Court had previously rejected the lawsuit in their favour.

Anurag Singh of Kesari fame is directing Border 2, which will premiere on the big screen in 2026.
