Saturday Night Live is all set to bring its witticisms to the United Kingdom. A British remake of the popular American variety sketch show was announced to be in development recently.
According to a report in Variety, the upcoming adaptation is in the initial stages of development and will be produced by Sky Studios.
The popular American comedy sketch show had previously been adapted in different countries such as China, Korea, Japan, France, Italy, Poland and Brazil. The Korean version of the series recently started airing again after a hiatus of a few years. The other countries’ remakes have ended their run.
The original Saturday Night Live premiered its first episode in 1975, hosted by the late stand up comedian George Carlin. The popular show has been the starting point for several of well known Hollywood stars' careers such as Chevy Chase, Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Eddie Murphy, Adam Sandler, Will Ferrell, Jimmy Fallon, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Seth Meyers, and Kristen Wiig. Current cast members include Pete Davidson, Mikey Day, Kate McKinnon, Cecily Strong, Aidy Bryant, Colin Jost and Michael Che among others.
The show was created by Lorne Michaels, who still serves as it’s executive producer. The show has been the recipient of numerous accolades, including over 80 Primetime Emmy Awards. Saturday Night Live is currently in it’s 47th season.
A premiere date for the British adaptation of the show is yet to be announced.
