Chatha Pacha actor Roshan Mathew defends Mammootty's cameo: 'He didn't come as the superstar he is'

Actor Roshan Mathew, known for more middle-of-the-road films, made quite an entry as the chiselled Vetri in the latest Malayalam movie Chatha Pacha. Even as Roshan Mathew is winning praise for his performance and stunts, Malayalam megastar Mammootty is drawing flak for his cameo performance in the action entertainer. But Roshan has come forward to defend Mammootty, stating that he appeared as the character and not the superstar he is.

Why is Mammotty getting trolled for Chatha Pacha cameo

Mammootty made a cameo appearance in the movie Chatha Pacha as Walter, a wrestler. The film revolves around four youngsters, who conduct wrestling fights in Kochi, and were once the proteges of Walter. But when Mammootty as Walter made an appearance in the movie, he was trolled for his Kochi dialect and mannerisms. However, Roshan Mathew, who played one of his proteges, defended the veteran, saying that audiences were expecting to see him as the megastar.

"What we were all expecting and waiting to see... what we signed for was megastar Mammootty's cameo. But Mammootty came there as this character Walter, who is a circusman and wrestler. He didn't come there as the superstar he is. He came there as a character he wanted to play,” Roshan said even as the audience applauded in agreement. Roshan made the statement during the success meet of Chatha Pacha held in Kochi on January 24.

Roshan Mathew on what he learned from Mammootty

During the event, Roshan Mathew also spoke about his debut movie performance, which was also in a Mammootty film, Puthiya Niyamam, 10 years ago. He played Aryan in the 2015 film, which also featured Patriot actress Nayanthara.

Recalling that for his initial shots, Roshan felt that he had not given his best and but assumed that it would be sorted during the other processes of editing and post-production. But then he featured opposite Mammootty in a sequence and got to watch the megastar performing up-close. Roshan recounted that he realised that he had been wrong, and whatever one had to emote needs to be performed at that point. 

When he performed that day, his character embodied everything that had happened up until then in the story, Roshan said. This happened in 2015 end during Puthiya Niyamam shoot. "From then till now, all that happened then has given me a goal to work towards. When you do a film, that is what you aim for,” Roshan remarked.
