But Dhoni has returned for the next season, only to prove them wrong. But it turns out that even while he is playing in the current season, he is not the captain and won’t be leading the Chennai Super Kings, as per the latest announcement. It has been confirmed that Ruturaj Gaikwad has been appointed as the new captain of the Chennai Super Kings and will be leading the team this season.
The official statement from the Chennai Super Kings announcing MS Dhoni handing over the captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad read, "MS Dhoni has handed over Chennai Super Kings’ captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad ahead of the start of TATA IPL 2024. Ruturaj has been an integral part of Chennai Super Kings since 2019 and has played 52 matches in IPL during this period. The team looks forward to the upcoming season." CSK will be playing against RCB tomorrow at 8:00 pm in the opening match of IPL 2024.

MS Dhoni has had a glorious career in the IPL. He has led CSK and the now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiants in 226 matches. Out of them, he has won 133 matches and lost 91. The possibility that he could be playing in his final season also makes us believe that this decision to pass on the captaincy could be a move to make sure there is a smooth transition.
